Ron Trzcinski

Ron Trzcinski was born in an ethnic borough on Cleveland's southeast side, graduating unceremoniously from Benedictine High School in 1962. He worked construction for a while, then attended Fenn College (now Cleveland State) night school. And then he got serious. After acquiring an MBA from the University of Virginia, he received many prestigious job offers, finally accepting a position in 1971 with Ohio Sealy.
For 18 years, Ron Trzcinski worked for the Ohio Mattress Co. now known as Sealy, Inc. becoming president and chief operating officer in 1982, at the age of 37. He was instrumental in its becoming the nation's largest mattress company. But after they underwent a leveraged buy out, new attitudes and business philosophies caused him to leave Sealy and begin a business of his own.
In 1990 he brought his expertise in the mattress industry and his firm belief in honesty and integrity to bear, creating the Original Mattress Factory. Working with his partners he focused on building the highest quality mattresses possible, but removed the middle man to reduce costs and sold directly to the public. The business has expanded to include 11 factories and over 80 factory stores, and it continues to grow. Partners who join the company share his ideas and convictions about selling mattresses fairly and honestly, and are looking for new ways to improve the products and service the Original Mattress Factory provides in ways that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and the company.
In his spare time, Ron enjoys spending time with his wife Pat and their six children. He is active in the community, and has sat on boards of local charitable organizations. He even coached a girls' basketball team helping them get to the State Division I Final Four two years in a row.
According to Trzcinski, sports and business are a lot alike: "Profit is a report card, a scorecard, a won-lost record. I don't sit in the mattress factory and say, 'How can we make a profit?' I ask, 'How can we do a better job? How can we make people want to come in? How can we help people see the value? How can we make a better bed?' If you do all those things, you will make a profit."
